Blog #3

I decided to rate my preventitive practices. After answering the ten questions I had yes on 7 out of 10.. The one's that I need to work on would be eating a healthful diet consisting of the appropriate servings of fruits and veggies ect, participate in moderate-intense physical activity, and relax/ maintain an overall sense of wellness. I do my best to follow a fairly healthy diet especially because I have children and I like them to have a well balanced meal but sometimes days are hectic and that does not always happen. As fo exercise I enjoy going outside and walking and I pull my little one around in her wagon but when it is so extremely hot it is almost impossible. Since it has cooled down a bit the past few weeks I have gotten out and walked about 1 mile twice a week and ocassionally three times a week. Some is better than none but I do realize I need to do more. Then my last fault is not taking time out for myself. Some days I feel like I might go insane being a stay at home mom and a full time student but keeping up with it all doesn't give me an extreme amount of time to relax. I guess my relaxing is sleep because most nights once my little one is down for the night I am too! :) Getting enough sleep is something I must have. Sleep is something I can not do well without and at times having a two year old you for sure need your sleep in order to laugh off some of the crazy things they pull. :) I also am very good about recieving routine preventive care. Luckily for me I do that since I had caught the basal cell skin spot on my nose before it had gotten very bad. Since I also have a passion for the dental field I regulalry make my routine dental checks as well.

  1. Hello Melissa,
I too took the self assessment practice activity and found my results to be similar to yours. I always find it interesting how much easier it is to look at which areas of your life you need to improve but how more difficult it is to implement positive behavior and change. I think that it's great that you identify which areas you need to improve and make a plan to improve those areas. Don’t forget to make time for yourself, even if it’s for an hour a week or an activity you enjoy doing once a month, this will be great for over all health. Good luck,

  2. Melissa-

I probably answered no to the same ones you did! I'm sure the majority of people could always change their eating habits somewhat to be better. As far as exercise, I'm trying to figure out when I can fit it in my busy schedule, too! Between work and commuting to school, it's been tough. But I am working on a plan for myself! These thoughts are always in the back of your mind, but when you see it on paper, I think it makes you think about it a little harder. Enjoyed your post!
